Disabled Showers, also called Wet Room Showers, are a popular modern alternative to the standard walk in shower tray. They are ideal for the disabled (especially wheelchair users) as they allow completely level access and provide a more spacious showering area than enclosed showers. They can even be fitted into small areas and awkwardly shaped areas where it would not be possible to install an enclosed shower area. A big advantage of wet floor showers is that they can be used by both the able bodied and disabled.

How do wet room showers differ from enclosed showers? Essentially a wet room shower is one that does not have a shower tray but rather all or part of the bathroom is fully waterproofed and the floor slopes gently towards a floor drain. Unlike enclosed showers a wet room shower blends seamlesly with the rest of the bathroom and gives greater versatility in the design of the bathroom.

How are wet room showers fitted? Firstly, the floor must be made to slope to a drainage point. Then the floor will be either tiled or covered in a slip resistant flooring. The walls must also be tiled to waterproof the walls. In some instances you may wish to separate the bathroom toilet from the shower with a stud wall.

Are wet room showers watertight? Yes, provided you get the wet room shower fitted by us or any other experienced installer. If fitted correctly your wet room shower should remain watertight for many years to come.

Are wet room showers suitable for wheelchair users? Yes, Wet room Showers or level access showers are the ideal option for wheel chair users as they provide spacious fully level access.

Summary:

  • Provide open level access
  • No shower tray required
  • Slip resistant
  • Fully watertight
  • No need for shower curtain
  • Ideal for wheelchair users

Some Thoughts on Installing Wet Rooms

Introduction to what a wetroom consists of:

A wet room is a whole bathroom, or a section of it, which is lined, or "tanked", with a waterproof membrane, such that no separate shower enclosure, or cubicle, is required. The shower area is, in fact, at the same level as the rest of the room, which may be more attractive, aesthetically, and practically. The walls of a wet room are typically tiled, to prevent water penetration, and the floor slopes towards a main drain. The capacity of the drainage system and the rate of water flow are, therefore, important considerations in the design of any wet room. Many wet rooms also incorporate a toilet, and a wash basin; these should be accessible without the need to walk across a wet floor, so should be positioned closer to a wet room door than a shower area.

Wet Room Installation

Perfect waterproofing – of the floor, by tanking, and of the walls, by tiling – is the key to a successful wet room, so it may be wise to employ a single contractor to complete the entire project for you, rather than a succession of individual tradesmen, none of whom has overall responsibility. Bear in mind, too, that the sub-floor in a wet room must be absolutely rigid, and may therefore need to be strengthened, and that the level of the floor will be raised by 2", or so, to accommodate waste fittings. This, in turn, means that the wet room door will need to be shaved, and that the difference in height between wet room, and adjoining, flooring, will need to be rectified in some way.

Wet room underfloor heating is really a must, especially in a large wet room, but may be complemented with heat towel rails, or radiators, in a variety of designs, to add comfort. A range of underfloor heating products – typically electric heating cables, or mats – guaranteed to be suitable for use in wet rooms is available.

Safety is, of course, paramount in a wet room, and particularly so if the room is to be used by the elderly, or the disabled. A wet room can provide direct, unhindered access to a shower area for wheelchair users, for example, but you may like to think about widening the door, to provide access to the wet room, itself, and installing access ramps, grab rails, and shower seats, depending on the level of mobility of the users.
